New Job
Sitting here at my desk, buzzed on the gallon of coffee I've had today (and yet I could still so go for a nap right now), it occurred to me that I need a new job. Which is not to say that I want to quit this job; heaven forbid. This is a sweet gig, even if it is a little Dullsville sometimes.
I guess I should say that I need an "additional" job. One that I could do on the side. At night. In a bar. Where they let me sing.
Yes, the job that I've decided I should have is this: Host of a Karaoke Night
I know for a fact that people have this job because, well, let's just say there was a time in my life where I participated in acts of karaoke a whole, whole, whooooole lot. And, at some of the places we would go (the hipper, more with-it places) they would have guys or girls that would sort of run the evening. Calling names, introducing songs, being witty, and, of course, taking the time to belt out a heart-wrenching power ballad or two. For their trouble, they were awarded a share of the bar's tips, plus all the free booze that could pour down their throats before last call.
Folks, I could do this job. I would be AWESOME at this job. So if someone would please see to it that this job falls in my lap, I'd really appreciate it and you'll get first dibs on whatever song you want to rock the house with. Thanks!
P.S. My top ten favorite songs to sing karaoke are:
"Don't Stop Believin" by Journey
"Back For Good" by Take That
"Lost In Your Eyes" by Debbie Gibson
"Is She Really Goin' Out With Him?" by Joe Jackson
"Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates
"All Out of Love" by Air Supply
"How Deep Is Your Love" by The Bee Gees
"China Girl" by David Bowie
"Two Pina Coladas" by Garth Brooks (Oh, eat me; I'm from Texas)
"Brandy" by Looking Glass

Journey?!

If you find this job, please let me know. Due to a drunken release of emotions (aka testoserone overload) a few weeks ago, I am no longer welcome to sing/slur everyones favorite country classics at our karaoke haunt. I am willing to fly to New York in order to partake in this fun.
Top 5
"Centerfield"- John Fogerty
"Could've Been Me"- Billy Ray Cyrus
"Shameless"- Garth Brooks/ Billy Joel
"Pride and Joy"- Stevie Ray Vaughn
"You May Be Right"- Billy Joel
... also sang "Your Song" by Elton John more times than I'd like to admit. Lets just say it once helped me get laid and all move on!
"Take me home" phil collins.
Not a dry eye in the house ;)

oh screw debbie gibson, i'm all about "the slow descent into alcoholism" by new pornographers. everybody: My! My! My! My slow descent!/Into alcoholism, it went/Something like this "ahhhhh!"
anybody? anybody???
Lioux... Um, yeah Journey. Because they're awesome.
Scott... I'll keep you posted. Where, incedentally, does one go in Arlington for karaoke? Oh, excellent call on "Centerfield" by the way.
Jew... I very occassionally do Mr. Collins's "Against All Odds." But not very well.
Pigeon... Woah! I didn't even know that song was available in a karaoke format! And Debbie Gibson is fantastic. So there.
We used to go to "Someplace Else"... until the aforementioned unfortunate incident. It was a little shithole at off Arbrook and Fielder. They used to serve beer in a can.
"Centerfield" was my signature song... brought down the house!
Eli still does a killer "In the Air Tonight" btw... except after a bunch of shots, it just turns into a prolonged air drum solo.
Seriously, there's real money in it for you if you can get an "In The Air Tonight" performance on video.
Well, not "real" money, per se. Maybe an ice cold beer. Or possibly just some ice. Whatever's cheap.
Best karoake song ever?
Rupert Holmes - 'Escape [The Pina Colada Song]'
My song of choice is "Sister Golden Hair" by America
If I'm really drunk I'll try "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel which never ends pretty (although I do know all the words)
Then there was the time I tried "It's the End of the World As We Know It" by REM....we don't speak of that day anymore.
even if it is a little Dullsville sometimes.
I have to ask.... Is this El Boring Boringsons hometown?
Then there was the time I tried "It's the End of the World As We Know It" by REM....we don't speak of that day anymore.
Im am not even kidding, I know every word and I ROCK at this song at karaoke. I dont even look at the tv. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline
i was expecting a little more than journey. i dont get the journey renissance. think of something original!
Big Daddy... True, true. And apt, as I do in fact like getting caught in the rain.
Dmbmeg... "Sister Golden Hair" is an EXCELLENT selection, if my opinion matters at all. Nice. Also, I used to know all of "End of the World as We Know It" but that was before the ravages of alcohol turned my brain into a collender.
Midwesterner... Dullsville is where El Boring Boringson raises his five little boredlettes, yes.
Poster Nutbag... Don't hate on the Journey, dude. Steve Perry had a crazy good voice. It was super-cheesy, no denying that, but when it's 2am and you're drunk in a bar in the East Village, busting out the lyrics "Just a small town boy, livin' a lonely world" feels sooooo right.
Journey is prime karaoke material, gotta have that one journey ballad in there..
i gotta commend you on the choice of Take That as well. haha, classic cheeesee. I'd buy you a beer for singing that one.
This is random, but have you ever watched Channel 101's "Yacht Rock"? The Steve Perry comments reminded me of it. :)
uh huh, 'slow descent' and many other special, hard-to-karaoke songs are to be included in our lineup at my new multi-million-dollar KaraokeDome I am about to open. We have hot girl dancers, a Pabst fountain and eight different kinds of Steve Perry wigs you can wear during your set. Only prob: We don't have a host. It sucks, particularly given the gigantic salary we have set aside for him/her.
Gwiz... I just recently discovered my long-dormant love of Take That. They just want me back for good.
Giggleloop... Haven't heard of that, but I'd very much like to hear some Yacht Rock. I bet it's yacht-tastic!
Pigeon... (clears throat loudly while pointing at himself)
Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler! 'cause "once upon a time i was falling in love but now i'm only falling apart..."
Clinton - you will appreciate my karaoke story from my recent business trip to Seattle. I once sang 19 songs in one night and hold a record at a bar in my old college town. (FYI I have the worse voice EVER).
Top 10 in no particular drunken order:
1. "Livin on a Prayer" Bon Jovi
2. "Only the Good Die Young" BJ
3. "To Be With You" Mr. Big
4. "Africa" Toto
5. "Your Song" Elton J
6. "Cherish" Madonna
7. "The Gambler" Kenny Rogers
8. "Shoop" Salt 'n Pep
9. "Land Down Under" Men at Work
10. "Friends in Low Places" Garth
~Irish
PS: Please get this job... I will visit weekly.
Playing Ugly... Well, once upon a time there was light in my life, now there's only love in the dark. So there.
Irish... 19 songs in one night? Damn girl, you need to get on the horn with Guiness (the book or records, not the tasty beverage). Very impressive. Also, totally love you inclusion of "To Be With You" by Mr. Big. Lerve that song.
Many thanks to irish for mentioning Friends in Low places. If someone didn't, I was ready to. Also, everyone else singing along with you covers up any bad notes with that song.
