Question For Music Listeners

Where are we, as a nation, on The Killers?

I've kind of only been vaguely aware of their existence, but then today I ended up listening to this huge playlist of their stuff and... hey, turns out... I'm a fan. Had no idea, but it seems to be the case.

So I guess really my question is: Does this make me a sixteen year old girl? Or does it make me someone who doesn't know "what it's all about?" Or are The Killers one of those bands that's generally accepted by the hips and squares alike, all White Stripes style?

I mean I don't really care one way or the other. Their music has a weird epic-ness to it that makes my invoice inputting seem like something so much more and I appreciate that. I just like to know where I stand from a cultural perspective.

Here’s them doing an awesome version of Dire Straits’ “Romeo & Juliet,” which has always been one of my favorite songs.

And here's their “Smile Like You Mean It," which is also quite nice.

Oh… and for no reason, here’s Mr. Rogers getting weird with a break-dancing twelve year old. He tries to Moonwalk. Seriously.

I love them and think they're headed for greatness. But, generally... average people openly love the Killers, while indie snobs only secretly and guiltily love them while in public they bash them to no end. But no worries, it's just because the Killers are so huge that it would hurt the hipsters' indie cred to admit any affinity towards the band. They're also even more popular in the UK than in the US, for some reason. Good for you for becoming a fan! I suggest you see them live if you ever get the chance... and make sure you know the words to their songs... it's an amazing experience.

Ah, very good. That's kind of what I figured... I knew I'd seen them on MTV before, which usually means the hipster crowd has to immediatly not like them. I'll have to keep an eye out for their next tour. Thanks for the heads up!

*ahem*

Being an industry 'insider', a BFF gave me an advanced copy of 'Hot Fuss' a few months before it was released...

I totally fell in LLLLOOOOVVVVEEEE with The Killers®™©™.

omg, Romeo and Juliet is one of my faves too!!!! I'm listening to the version you posted just now. Maybe I like The Killers too! But I've never been hip, particularly not musically, so I don't know if that helps you figure anything out.

I love the Killers and have the water bottle that Brandon Jacobs drank from at a Webster Hall show - yeah, I'm kind of like a 12 year old girl when it comes to the Killers I suppose.

Lioux... Can you get me CDs before they're released? Because I heard Barbra Streisand is coming out with a new album. Hello, Gorgeous!!!

Brooklyn... When we get married, I'm going to totally let Girlfriend do whatever she wants with everything. Whatever she decides, I'm good. However, my one request is that we get to dance to "Romeo & Juliet" because it's like one of the most romantic songs ever (to me). Even though the lyrics are, technically, about a break-up. Whatever. Totally dancing to that at my wedding. But now... which version?

Blythe... This guy tried to tell me otherwise yesterday. He's dead now.

Eric... That is hilarous! But I totally understand; Ben Folds sweated on me one time at a show in Austin and it sort of felt like a religious experience.

the killers are cool.

i initially dismissed them because of their band name which seemed pretentious and/or just plain stupid. the killers sounds like they should look more "hardcore" looking, whatever that means. but perhaps they were being ironic, which is so the hipster thing to do nowadays. like that bullshit group five for fighting which sounds pretty hardcore but they sing bullshit pop ballads! fuck them!

anyway, wife and i dug hot fuss but haven't gotten into their last one. only know that one song they sing with jesus being name dropped in the chorus which every drunk chick seems to sing in the bar when it plays!

Hot Fuss is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and Romeo and Juliet, both the Killers version AND the Dire Straits version is my favorite song EVER. Reminds me of teenage groping ;)

However, you can have Romeo & Juliet as your wedding song, because I have decided that when I marry my invisible boyfriend, I want Thank You by Led Zeppelin :)
