I got paid today and, somehow, I'm still totally broke. Not particularly thrilled about that fact and, at the moment, not really in the mood to do anything other than wallow in a large trough of self-pity while pretending to work. It will pass, sooner or later (the self-pity, not the pretending to work; that's eternal), but for right now... I'm feeling very, very meh.

Oh, and if anyone knows a quick way to make a few bucks that doesn't involve selling either rock or my sweet, sweet ass, feel free to let me know. I've reached the "Probably going to start looking for a part-time job" stage of my financial woes and anything I can do to stave off that inevitability would be most appreciated. I'm thinking here about product testing, medical research, that sort of thing... nothing too labor intensive (I'm weak) and nothing that's outside of the 5 burroughs (I don't travel well).

Check out mystery shopping and doing online surveys. It's decent income if you can stand the lag between doing the survey/shop and getting paid (about 4-6 weeks). I've been doing them for about 3 years off and on.

Hey, thanks for the tips! I'll look in to that survey stuff, for sure. Totally right about the Mystery Shopper thing... I tried to do that a few years ago and they wanted me to pay like 60$ or something a month to "maintain my database." It was really fun telling them to fuck off because I used exactly those words.
ReplyDeleteI make a lovely $250/week and am sort of starving to death, so I feel your pain! Not only that, but my tax refund is almost nothing this year. I recommend petsitting! You can stick yourself on Craigslist, charge however much you want, and take a job whenever you've got enough time. I also do survey-taking stuff, but what they don't tell you is that you won't fit the demographic for most of the surveys that come up. It took me six months to make $6.90. But I still put that check in my bank account the instant it came in the mail!

You should do what I do. I grab about a grand a week after taxes, live in a house I pay nothing for, free utilities, total medical for me and my family, full dental, 100% tuition assistance for any college classes I want and when I retire (at age 38) I'll keep getting half my pay and all my medical benefits for the rest of my life. Each year I get 30 days of paid vacation and a guaranteed raise. Its pretty sweet, really.

ReplyDeleteAh, gotcha. That's cool; I have a buttload of respect for the men and women that have the "goods" to be in the Armed Forces. I actually come from a family that's got it's fair share of soldiers amongst our various broods. Not really my thing, though... I have authority issues that probably wouldn't go over to well in a military setting. Also, if I were asked to fly a jet, I'd probably just start crying and I don't think they'd like that either.
ReplyDeleteWell, I actually spend all of my time in the air conditioning in front of a computer in such hardship locales as Hawaii and Maryland. I do see airplanes on my way to and from work and I've taken advantage of the ability to fly on a few larger ones for free but in the end its not all that much different (day to day anyway) from a regular job. To be honest, though, the first few years involve a lot of shit work and not much money. I'm living in Japan now which is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteThat is, in fact, very cool. My uncle was an Army something-or-other and was stationed both in Hawaii and Japan back in the 80's. He still talks about with great reverence.
